Here are a couple articles on what’s happening at EMI these days:
Terra Firma Seeks Another $160 Million for EMI
Report: EMI Plans ‘Radical’ Cost Cuts, More Layoffs
What the hell is going on at EMI??? How long has this song-and-dance been playing out? For many years in the past decade, a rumoured EMI/Warner merger was tossed around, but never went through. Now, I haven’t heard any rumours of this proposal beingĀ rampedĀ up once again, but when $160M is being sought out to hedge off creditors, one can’t help but wonder if drastic measures are being tabled once again (of course, beyond laying off more employees!). I don’t see how the label will be better run if it’s taken-over by Citigroup. Anyone that knows the Music Industry knows that our business is unlike any other business. I suppose “private equity” will always be private equity…and will get spent accordingly.
Interesting stuff.
***UPDATE:
Hard-up EMI seeks buyer for Abbey Road studios
Here’s a further development to this story. This isn’t, from a Record Label perspective, the most drastic thing that could happen to this company; but it sure is a sign of dumping assets. I think that this recording studio has far too much history to really worry about the future of the facility itself (Radiohead…The Beatles), so this is just another little “something” to keep in mind.
Even MORE interesting
