I felt the need to re-post this. I read this in Bob Lefsetz’ blog today and it’s too good to pass up — not only that, I feel compelled to lend a hand to the band!
Open Letter From OK Go, regarding non-embeddable YouTube videos
Summation: EMI owns OK GO’s copyrights (i.e. recordings), so they control where they are viewed and disseminated. This is done in the name of controlling revenue streams and appeasing shareholders. What is missing is a symbiosis with the Artist, and, a viable alternative to simply stifling a valuable medium — The Internet — and connecting with fans and, ultimately, their consumer base.
Perhaps only insiders know how truly messed up the nature of music-business really is (another example: why Spotify isn’t available in North America!???), so hopefully this will help start to clue people in.
